Benghazi

Benghazi is in north-eastern Libya.Located on the Gulf of Sidra Benghazi, it is the second largest city in the country and has a population of 950,000 inhabitants.
Benghazi has a Mediterranean climate with moderate wet winters and warm dry summers.
Benghazi was founded around 6th century BC by the Ancient Greeks and named Euesperides. The city's present name is derived from that of a pious benefactor—Ghazi; Bani Ghazi means Ghazi's descendants.
The city suffered severe damage during World War II, today it serves as a major economic centre with emphasis on the manufactured goods and finance sector. The city has a multiethnic population, with a majority of people of Arab decent.

 

 

Tripoli
 

Tripoli is Libya's largest city and port, the country's capital and the full-time residence of Colonel Qaddafi.
It is located on the Mediterranean Sea, in the north-western part of the country.The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers, cool winters and some modest rainfall.

The city was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea.
In 643 AD it came under the Arabic domination and then it became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1551.
As an important gateway between Africa and Europe, commerce prospered through the years.

Modern Tripoli is divided into two parts:
El-Mina, the port area and site of the beautiful ancient city;
The town of Tripoli.
Tripoli International Airport is very near the city.

 

Derna
 

Derna or Darnah is located in the northern part of Libya, along the Mediterranean Sea. This peaceful seaside town is home to approximately 81,000 inhabitants. 

Derna
enjoys a humid Mediterranean climate with temperatures in the summer averaging 30°C. Winter temperatures are much cooler here than in the interior desert region; rainfall occurs at this time of the year.

It was the Battle of Derna, fought in this region around 200 years ago, that put the region on the map. The American troops travelled for 500 miles throug the Libyan Desert to capture the city during the first war between the USA and North African states.

This historical site is now a flourishing coastal town flanked by clear waters and beaches on one side and rocky but green mountains on the other side.
